Good Home Onehunga

Good Home Onehunga

Hey - a little review for you.... Onehunga is well known for its excellent discount label shopping, and quick bites.  But it the suburb has been longing for this - a really good, family gastro pub. Now its arrived, I was invited to go have a little look, and here are my thoughts....

Several seating areas - some snug in a cosy library setting, some in a conservatory / atrium style setting - then a fabulous outdoor deck area - one side overlooking a downstairs and very cool little kids play area - full marks, for thinking that one through. Parents get to have a quiet one, with the kids in full view - but away from all the diners that may have escaped their own kids looking for relief!!!  I would definitely stop in for a beer or wine with friends after work.

House tap beer - was very, very good - kinda crucial for this environment. A great range of 'The Mix' cocktails for $10 - So you definitely don't have to hit the wallet too hard.

We were there early Sunday evening and the place was a nice kind of busy, with a good buzz about it. A mix of families and friends, that obviously had decided to do the same as us and take the easy option (not cook) on a Sunday night!!

Large range of choices on the menu - Pizza, steak, nachos all the usual suspects, but then there were some little foodie loving treats tucked in there... 'pear and Whangapiroblue cheese skald with sweet salted walnuts'  or 'chargrilled lamb salad with haloumi and lemon, garlic dressing'  We went the steak route... both exceedingly well executed - tender, juicy and perfectly cooked.  Mash, onion rings and béarnaise sauce on one, the other was 2 perfectly fried eggs, chips and salad.. junior had the beef brisket nachos with jalapeños, sour cream, salsa and cheddar (which required a doggy bag). So we skipped the New York Cheesecake (with rhubarb compote) but I will be back to later to check that one out!!

There were tables that had the perfect vantage points of large sport-game toting screens, so it would clearly be the place to come and watch a live sports game with your friends.

Overall it was comfortable and relaxed with really enjoyable food and surroundings, definitely be back for that 'local' vibe.

What I love the most, is the new life they have breathed into the gorgeous heritage building, and given it a whole new chapter of tales to tell.
