Friday afternoon with Peter Lehmann and Harbourside.....


On arrival I met a really lovely bubbly - NV Giesen Cuvee - was launched a while ago, and was a definite win for me - it is lightly fruity (think summer tropical rather than green apple) and lightly dry, almost mineraly finish, the slight sweetness, that the fruitiness brought, won me over, and I can see this in my future this summer..  Worth a try if you come across it.


While I am very familiar with Peter Lehmann as a brand - Australian, really great Shiraz, and reasonably easy to find in New Zealand - I was a little less aware of the history and how Peter Lehmann came about, so I am going to briefly share that story... A while back (circa '78) there was literally an oversupply of grapes, jeopardising the future of the small winemakers and vineyards of the Barossa Valley.  In creating the Barossa Valley winery, he provided a form of commercial umbrella, protecting, what is now 700 including of the oldest and most treasured vineyards of Australia.  Well known now world wide for award winning Shiraz.

Much to my delight I was sitting beside 2 people who were not particularly keen on oysters... and kindly offered me theirs... if you follow my insta - you'll understand my lack of shyness about this.

This latest release 'The Barossan' has been made by senior winemaker Tim Dolan and I quote "Tim respects the tradition and integrity of Barossa Shiraz and has carefully selected the fruit which he feels best represents his beloved region to create this wine. Fruit for The Barossan Shiraz 2015 has been sourced from some of the longest standing grower families in the Barossa; third, fourth and fifth generation growers from across the region have shared pristine fruit from mature vineyards, the oldest dating back to 1966. The wine has been crafted to highlight the unique attributes and qualities of the Barossa’s many sub regions, each of which brings an individual characteristic to the wine."
