I had been invited to go check out this new Popup in the Viaduct - So Sunday evening, in the middle of a long weekend, seemed like the perfect timing, hoping everyone else had left Auckland, but no.... It was really buzzing down by the harbour - with the light show in full swing and lots of families strolling taking it all in.
Bright, slightly eclectic, beachy, easy breezy feel.
Menu is beer matched, or it could be around the other way craft beers then a menu to match, which is a great thing - this is the spot for late afternoon, pre or post match. Awesome lineup of platters... and then a touch of foodie favourites...
The menu boasted a fine list of burgers... think Flame Grilled Angus Beef or Manuka Smoked Pulled Pork and (the one I could quite possibly be going back for) Buttermilk Soaked Southern Fried Chicken!!
While I'm on this topic of 'next time' I am really intrigued with the platters - and could well order those next time - they are recommended for 4 people, so we didn't really want to overcommit ourselves.... I'll hit up my foodie friends for an outing to check these out.
Vegans look away now... Bone Marrow - this is such a weakness for me .... love, love, love when you get that perfect combination of adding something to the dish to 'cut' that marrow buttery richness, so that you can have another mouthful without feeling overwhelmed by the richness. Perfect combo right here.
Bone Marrow Brulee with sherry gastrique, crispy shallots, grilled bread. Just Perfect.
Mr 12 studying health at school shared a precaution on the type of food I was relishing.... I just smiled and agreed and finished everything on the plate. Its actually really fun going out as a family when your 12 year old refuses even considering the kids menu.
So lets get to more food pictures.....
Beetroot Salad - Goat cheese, whitloof, bacon and hazelnuts.
Simple and delicious.
Pan Seared Baby Chicken with cauliflower, brown butter, mushroom, prosciutto, herbs, jus.
This really was baby chicken, very tender and sweet, contrasted perfectly with the crispy salty proscuitto.
Shitake Mushroom, Pea, and Herb Fritter with charred eggplant, red pepper, tomato ragout.
I had a bit of a vege craving and the tomato ragout had a wonderful smokiness to it. This is the vegan option - not something I usually order... tomato ragout was so good chips were being dipped (usually vegan meals are left with their owners - in my family anyway.)
Tabasco Brined Oyster Po Boy - breaded in cornmeal on a tender hoagie with
lettuce, tomato, and homemade aioli.
Yep - can recommend this one too.... even the accompanying fries were perfect - that's important.
